Zombie stories make a lot of sense if you replace 'zombie' with some other horrific pandemic. How would we cope in a worldwide medical crisis? Could we kill loved ones if it meant saving the rest of our family? Would soldiers and police be able to turn weapons on civilians? It's easy to shoot at Godzilla or Morlocks-- could we kill our spouse or child if survival depended on it? For me, nothing is more terrifying.

Very cool panel! It's the psychology -- or maybe lack thereof -- that people are constantly trying to understand, and draws us to the subject of zombies unrelentingly. Though I always suspected it's a hold-over fear from the Dark Ages, back when lepers used to roam the streets and were forced to cloak themselves to hide their rotting flesh and ring a bell to announce their condition to the world. St. Vitus dance, anyone?

Can't wait to eat -- er, read, more!

Let's not forget that although the book concerned vampires rather than zombies, Romero's seminal NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD was inspired by Richard Matheson's novel I AM LEGEND. Although the definitive feature-film version has yet to be made, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH was extremely faithful, and its shambling vampires may have influenced Romero as well. Interested parties can read about all three versions in my forthcoming book RICHARD MATHESON ON SCREEN.
