BIG BAD KAIJU QUESTION #1: Why did you choose the kaiju you did?

KEVIN J. ANDERSON: My story “Just Add Water” is a bit different from the other stories in the anthology, in that it is overtly funny, a comedy with one particularly rambunctious giant monster. It’s set in the universe of my Dan Shamble, Zombie P.I. series, which already has plenty of monsters living everyday lives in the Unnatural Quarter. When there are regular monsters on every corner, what could be more destructive than a giant … frisky puppy?

BIG BAD KAIJU QUESTION #2: What makes a Kaiju story so much fun?

KEVIN: All of the usual plot details get thrown out the window, because while the monster is present, ALL you can do is deal with the big galoot. How does a poor gigantic thing even get from point A to point B without stepping on something?

BIG BAD KAIJU QUESTION #3: Is Clifford the Big Red Dog a Kaiju? What is your definition of a Kaiju?

KEVIN: Of course … as is quite apparent in my story.

BIG BAD KAIJU QUESTION #4: What would make the best Kaiju battle? Who vs Who?

KEVIN: Godzilla vs Kong is about as epic as I can imagine, though I have to admit a certain fondness for the original version I watched as a kid, and the ending where they both fall off a cliff into the sea (must have been a HIGH cliff!), and only one emerges from the water. If I remember right, in the US, King Kong was the winner and in Japan Godzilla emerged from the water alone.

BIG BAD KAIJU QUESTION #5: What's your favorite Kaiju?

KEVIN: I have such fond memories of this, that I don’t dare rewatch it because I don’t want to taint my recollection. I absolutely loved WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS, with the giant squid in the opening scene, the evil Green Gargantua, the good Brown Gargantua. Even starring Russ Tamblyn as the American actor to make the movie palatable to Western audiences. Man, I wish someone would remake that.

BIG BAD KAIJU QUESTION #6: Do you have any plans on taking the monster from your story (or poem) and expanding it into a novel?

KEVIN: No, but the story will indeed be included in my Dan Shamble, Zombie P.I. series and become part of that canon!

Meet KEVIN J. ANDERSON: Kevin J. Anderson has published more than 190 books, fifty-eight of which have been national or international bestsellers. He has written comics and graphic novels for Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, BOOM!, IDW, and others—including Dr. Strange, Batman, Superman, Justice Society of America, Star Wars, Predator, X-Files, and Dune. His adaptation of Dune: The Graphic Novel was a New York Times bestseller and named one of the 100 greatest graphic novels of all time by Comic Book Authority.

Anderson is the director of the graduate program in Publishing at Western Colorado University, and he and his wife Rebecca Moesta are the publishers of WordFire Press. He is a long-time resident of Colorado and is an avid hiker and mountain climber.
